How to Raise Godly Children in a Digital World
Introduction:
Screens
are everywhere—from phones and tablets to TVs and laptops. In today’s digital
world, raising godly children feels harder than ever. Technology has become an
inseparable part of our daily lives, and with it, the challenges of parenting
have intensified. We face questions such as: How do we protect our children
from harmful online content? How do we foster their spiritual growth while
navigating the pressures of a digital society? But with God’s Word as our guide
and intentional parenting, we can raise children who love Jesus more than they
love technology.
1. God Has a Blueprint for Parenting
In
the midst of the fast-paced and ever-changing world of technology, it’s important
to remember that God has given us a blueprint for parenting. Proverbs 22:6
says,
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not
depart from it.”
God’s Word is timeless, and it offers us practical wisdom to guide our children
through every stage of life, including the digital age. Parenting in the
digital era doesn’t mean giving up or giving in to the pressures of
technology—it means being more intentional and purposeful. Our children need us
to guide them in building a strong foundation of faith while also equipping
them to live in the world they are growing up in.
Parenting
in today’s digital world requires us to be proactive. It’s about raising
children who are aware of their purpose and who are grounded in their
faith—children who know how to use technology wisely and biblically. Let God’s
Word be the compass that directs your parenting decisions.
2. Set Digital Boundaries Without
Legalism
While
the digital world has its benefits, it can also be overwhelming and potentially
harmful, especially for young minds. As parents, it’s essential to set
boundaries for your children when it comes to screen time and digital
consumption. Setting boundaries is not about being overly restrictive or
legalistic—it’s about teaching your children how to make wise choices and
manage their time well.
Create
tech rules that reflect your family values, such as:
- No
screens at the dinner table. This encourages family interaction and fosters
connection.
- A set
“media-free” day each week (e.g., Sunday). This time away from screens can be
used for family bonding, reading the Bible, or simply resting.
- Limit
content to age-appropriate, Christ-centered options. There are plenty of apps,
websites, and shows that promote Christian values and provide positive
entertainment. Choose these over secular or harmful content.
Additionally, encourage your children to engage in activities that are not tech-related, such as creative hobbies, outdoor play, reading, and spending time with family and friends. This balance is key to helping them develop a well-rounded lifestyle where technology is not the main focus.
3. Model Faith at Home
Children
are deeply influenced by what they see in their parents. This is why modeling
faith in the home is essential. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 tells us,
“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon
your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at
home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
If
your child sees you prioritizing prayer, devotion, and godly media, they are
more likely to follow your example. This goes beyond just telling them what to
do; it’s about showing them through your own actions. Be intentional about
living out your faith in front of them—whether it’s through daily Bible
readings, family prayers, or making choices that honor God.
“More
is caught than taught.” Your children will learn much from your actions, so let
your life reflect the love of Christ. The best way to raise godly children is
to be a godly parent who is constantly seeking to grow in faith and
righteousness.
4. Choose Godly Media Together
In
a world where screens are everywhere, it's unrealistic to ban all digital
content. However, you can guide your children in making wise choices about what
they consume. Choose godly media options and use them as opportunities to
discuss faith and biblical values with your children.
Instead
of shying away from media altogether, engage with your children by:
- Using
Christian media apps
like Superbook, Minno, and Bible App for Kids, which offer age-appropriate
content filled with biblical teachings.
- Watching
and discussing movies
with biblical values. After watching a movie, ask your children questions
like, “What did you learn from this story?” or “What does the Bible say
about this situation?”
- Using
every tech moment as a discipleship moment. When your child is watching a
video or playing a game, use that time to discuss what they are learning
and how it aligns with Scripture. For example, after watching a show, ask,
“What do you think Jesus would say about this song or show?”
By
being involved in their digital lives and guiding their choices, you can help
shape their values and create a space for meaningful conversations about faith.
5. Pray Over Their Eyes, Minds &
Hearts
One
of the most powerful tools we have as parents is prayer. While we cannot always
control what our children are exposed to in the digital world, we can pray for
their protection. As they navigate the online world, pray over their eyes,
minds, and hearts, asking God to guard them from harmful influences and fill
them with His truth.
Declare
Isaiah 54:13 over them:
“All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great
shall be the peace of your children.”
Pray for wisdom to guide your children, and ask God to fill their hearts with
His peace, love, and knowledge. Pray that they would be grounded in their faith
and that they would love God above all else, even when faced with the
distractions of the digital world.
Final Encouragement:
Raising
godly children in a digital world is no easy task, but it’s not one that you
have to face alone. You have the Holy Spirit to guide you, God’s Word to direct
you, and His love to empower you. Don’t be discouraged if things don’t always
go as planned. Trust that God is working in the hearts of your children, and He
will give you the strength and wisdom you need.
As
you partner with God, He will equip you to raise children who love and serve
Him, even amid a noisy, tech-driven world. Keep praying, stay intentional, and
rely on the grace of God as you continue to train up your children in the way
they should go.
Memory Verse:
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are
walking in the truth.”
— 3 John 1:4
